Why train with bands?

People always ask about training with bands.

Why use them? Why not just stick with straight weight?

The truth is, bands create a completely different stimulus in the body. They challenge your nervous system in a way that bar weight alone doesn’t. They force you to stay tight, move fast, and apply force throughout the entire lift.

You’ve probably seen someone sprint with a parachute behind them. Then, when they take that parachute off, they look fast and explosive. Band training works in that same way. You’re constantly training under added tension, so when that tension is gone, the weight feels lighter and your body is ready to move.

One of the biggest benefits of bands is how they change the strength curve of a lift. As you move through the range of motion, the tension increases. That means you can’t relax at the top, and you can’t be slow coming out of the bottom. You have to stay engaged the entire time.

That constant tension forces your body to adapt. It builds stronger bracing, a more stable core, and better control under load. Over time, that carries over into EVERYTHING. Squats, deadlifts, presses… all of it.

EP.439 | Why We Love Bands

Speed on speed

Another thing bands teach really well is speed.

If you try to move too slow, the bands will expose it immediately. They demand intent. They force you to be aggressive, especially in movements like the deadlift. If you don’t attack the lift, you’ll get pulled out of position fast.

That’s something a lot of lifters struggle with… learning how to apply force, not just move weight.

Bands help bridge that gap.

They also create a unique training effect where, after spending time under that added tension, straight bar weight can feel completely different. Your body adapts to the overload, and when it’s removed, everything feels faster and more explosive.

Bring the intensity

Beyond the physical benefits, bands also change the mindset you bring to training.

You can’t go through the motions with them. You have to be locked in. You have to bring intent to every rep. And over time, that carries into how you approach all of your training.

That’s really what it comes down to.

Bands aren’t just about adding resistance. They’re about creating better movement, better speed, better control, and better intensity. And when you start training with that kind of intent, everything else tends to follow.
