Don’t do it!

One of the traditions in our house is homemade milkshakes. My younger kids love them, and honestly, I enjoy making them. I’ll crush up Oreos, mix in ice cream and milk, and go full Blizzard-style with just a fork or spoon. Nothing crazy fancy. Just simple and really good.

But every time I make one, there’s a small moment that tests discipline.

After everything is mixed and poured, there’s always a little left on the spoon. And you know the feeling… it would be really easy to just take a quick lick before tossing it in the sink. No big deal, right?

For me, it is a big deal.

Because I know how that story ends. It doesn’t stop at the spoon. It turns into a small handful of Oreos. Then maybe a few bites of ice cream. Before long, I’m way out of line and off track.

One small decision creates momentum… in the wrong direction.

Put some rules in place

Over time, I’ve learned that having simple personal rules removes the need to negotiate with yourself. You don’t waste energy debating whether something is “just a little bit” or convincing yourself it doesn’t count.

You just follow the rule. For me, one of those rules is simple: don’t lick the spoon.

It sounds minor, but small habits often determine whether progress continues or stalls. Most people don’t fall completely off track because of one big decision. It’s usually a series of small exceptions that slowly chip away at consistency.

Having structure makes this easier.

When you follow clear guidelines, you don’t feel restricted. You feel in control. You know when it’s time to be disciplined, and you know when it’s time to relax and enjoy yourself.

That balance is key. It allows you to stay consistent during the week while still having flexibility when the time is right.

What’s your version?

Everyone has their own version of the spoon. Maybe it’s finishing your kid’s leftovers. Maybe it’s grabbing a handful of snacks while cooking dinner. Maybe it’s eating something just because it’s there, even though it wasn’t part of the plan.

Individually, these moments feel small. But repeated over time, they create patterns. And patterns create results.

Protecting momentum often comes down to setting small standards that keep you aligned with your goals, even when no one is watching.

For me, one of those standards is simple: Don’t lick the spoon.

What’s yours?
