#1 The experience
Old School is not just a gym, but a destination for many that is going to bring to you a unique kind of value. OSG was founded by Dustin Myers and myself on the purest notion of securing the lost art of a real gym. I want people to feel what Old School is all about… from the moment they set foot inside the garage door.
Louie Simmons, the Godfather of Strength, has been through the gym several times to share his knowledge.
Another legendary icon, named Arnold Schwarzenegger, stopped by to leave his mark. It’s something that is difficult to put into words, but once you step inside OSG, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
All of this stemmed from a dream of two kids from the Ohio Valley that wanted to preserve a place in history.
#2 PR’s on PR’s
Intensity + Environment are two key elements to truly hitting a PR. Most people out there don’t understand what these concepts actually mean. In weightlifting, you are only as great as your crew, at least in our world.
One of the best things about my 4am crew is that I get beat almost daily, and I’m almost never the top dog. This keeps me in check, and it’s incredibly humbling when I get my ass kicked every day. I love feeding off the energy in the room, or creating that “intense” atmosphere myself by yelling like a maniac right along with the crazy loud rap music. It’s the absolute best when my crew is lit, because that means the weight’s feeling light today!
I can’t imagine how our gym could have turned out any other way. I’ve been very fortunate to have had some of the best training partners over the past few years. Finding good training partners is awfully hard to do, but when you do find them, it takes your game to the next level. People are willing to get up at 4am to train, are real as fuck, and want results.
#3 Meet day
There’s no feeling like the feeling of walking in to see a meet set-up, knowing that it’s almost time for the show. I have stepped on and off that platform so many times that it’s too many to count. One time in my career that sticks out was when I was battling for two elite totals. One was at 198, and the other at 181 lbs. The rush that you get from smashing a PR, along with the people cheering, will get you so hyped for your upcoming lifts.
One of the coolest things that you’ll see is when a new guy steps up in front of his family and hits some big lifts. The entire place erupts on those monster lifts, and the atmosphere is incomparable to anything I’ve experienced in my life. I will NEVER forget squatting 550 at 195, 540 at 181, and most recently 500 at 178.
